Venture Consulting Practice
The Maui Economic Development Board has hired CWV to develop a business plan for its AMOS (Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies) Conference.  A small CWV team endured the hardship of travel to Maui to kick off this project aimed at increasing the profitability of the conference.

The Bon Secours of Maryland Foundation has engaged CWV to develop a business plan for its Clean and Green Landscaping Venture in Baltimore, MD.  The goals of the venture are to make a profit while using environmentally friendly landscaping techniques and possibly employing graduates of the organization’s workforce training program.

 

In an effort to understand the needs of social enterprises in the Appalachian region, The Appalachian Regional Commission has engaged CWV to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the number of social enterprises in the region, the potential for growth, and supports needed to ensure that social enterprise can thrive.
 

The Latino Economic Development Corporation (LEDC) in Washington, DC has hired CWV to conduct a feasibility assessment of two social enterprise concepts.

 


Social Franchise Ventures
SFV hosted a workshop on May 15 at the Pond House Cafe in Hartford, CT.  Over 30 local nonprofits attended the event to learn more about the social franchise concept and whether it might be a fit for their organization.
 
Doug Sudell and Becky Eisen of SFV made a presentation to several New York-based nonprofits at the Minority Franchise Buyer's Conference at Columbia University on June 23.  Among the community development organizations in the audience was SFV client St. Nicholas Neighborhood Preservation Corporation, which is analyzing franchise opportunities for a full-service, family-style restaurant.
 
The June 25 Small Business section of the Wall Street Journal included an article entitled "Profits on the Side." The article provided a balanced viewpoint on nonprofit-owned franchises and profiled several social franchises, including the new Share Our Strength-WineStyles partnership.  Both Ben Litalien, president of Social Franchise Ventures, and Bill Shore, executive director of Share Our Strength, were quoted in the article.
 


Collaborative Programs
The North Texas Community Wealth Initiative formally launched on July 13, with an information session for nonprofit organizations. Nearly 200 nonprofits leaders and managers attended to learn more about social enterprise and how they could apply for the North Texas Community Wealth Collaborative. Community Wealth Ventures and its partner, the Center for Nonprofit Management, will select six to eight nonprofits for the Collaborative in early September. Please click here for more information.
 
The second Cleveland Community Wealth Collaborative culminated on July 11, with presentations by the seven participating nonprofit organizations. The ventures that these organizations are launching or growing include a dental clinic, care management services, and microenterprise.
 
The Newark Community Wealth Collaborative will culminate with its business plan presentations on September 5. The participating organizations are launching and growing ventures that range from a preschool to a downtown health clinic.
